How many people remember this blonde beauty? She competed in 1980 in the Ms America bodybuilding contest and placed 6th. She placed 12th in the 1982 Ms Olympia. Her last contest was in 1983. I always thought she was one of the best looking women bodybuilders back in that era from 1980-1983. Where is she today?

"Think her background was gymnastics", that would explain her athletic appearance. Many of the early female BB'ers came from gymnastic and dance backgrounds. The look displayed in the 80's sure beats the beasts of today; androgenous, can't tell what sex they from behind, poor breast implants, faces that would frighten Frankenstein (as a result of drug use), dry damaged hair from drug use, voices deeper then any man I know, and on and on.
sounds to me that the "other girl" who made that comment was speaking out of jealousy, or simply being catty.

As always, I feel the need to defend the female bodybuilders.
Taking the IronAge over the ModernAge is the reason many of us are here. So prefering the women of the '80s to the women of today is to be expected. And I don't have any problem with that.
But to attack them based on non bodybuilding criteria (i.e. face, hair, and voice) strikes me as childish and out of place here.

sorry but I must respectfully disagree; face, hair and voice are all the effects of the body building drugs they take in insane proportions. facial skin and voice changes are the direct result of testosterone, and hair is the result of thyroid disorder---drugs.

That's all true. But that wasn't my point.
My point was that women bodybuilders are attacked for things that we accept in the men (i.e. drug use) and that double standard is based on non-bodybuilding criteria.
In short: Male bodybuilders are not put down by people interested in the sport because they aren't pretty anymore.

They are. Look how much gh guts is (rightfully) are criticized on this forum.
And don't you think that if male bodybuilders were showing feminization signs, it would not be discussed here?
Well, when I think about it, this has already been the case (gyno)...
Gh guts are not equivalent to "ugly faces." Gh guts ruin the lines of the body.
Gyno is rightly looked down upon, but I've never heard anybody say "He's turning into a woman!"

mental fortitude & fierce determination!

twosta -
you are argueing the same argument I have battled against since the early 80's! I don't think we will ever change even bb who critisize fbb. I just try not to get upset about it and keep pushing the iron.
It's hard hearing this stuff for over 25 years, but it hasn't dampened my spirits & my desire to emulate the fbb of the early 80's. To me the women of this time period were the best this sport has seen

Hey Cowgirl,
I'm glad to hear you don't let let this stuff get you down. I wish I could say the same.
Tell you what - I'll fight the war of words, and you fight the war with the iron. That way, we'll at least have one worthy physique between us.

I found another picture of her (in Unleashing the Wild Physique):

I wonder if she had just picked a bogey. Her left hand seems to suggest so.

Muscle! The gold standard of sculpting.

Cowgirl...Exactly, and should have remained. Those ladies from that era should have been the poster women for female bodybuilding forever. And Shelley. I never met her but our offices at MUSCLE DIGEST 1980-81 had reams upon reams of photos of her and featured her extensively for about a three year period. Smile and abs...remember it well.
