Anyone used the stingray?
« on: September 14, 2003, 08:06:36 pm »

Hi everyone,

As my back squats have been getting heavier, I have noticed that in order to get my thighs to parallel or below, my upper body becomes almost horizontal to the ground.  I am sure that this has  something to do with my height (6'3").  The squats have been great for adding mass to my entire body, but I have to say that I rarely feel them in my quads.

So the other day I decided to try front squats.  They worked wonderfully in the sense that I was able to do a full squat with a much more upright torso.  Unfortunately my weight was literally cut in half to 165 lbs due to the cumulative fatigue on my shoulders and the fact that the bar kept on rolling into my throat  Tongue.  I tried them on the smith machine as well, but I seemed to be working against the machine rather than with it.

So I was wondering what advice people might have, including whether or not anyone has used the stingray to any great effect.

Thanks.
Matt

P.S. I do other exercises that target the quads but I would really like to hit them with squats.

Mattman,

I found that the heavier the weight, the more likely it is to slide towards your throat.  I've been doing front squats for quite some time now and what I do is roll up two towels (one over each shoulder) on the bar leaving the neck area free.

You can also try different hand placings, like either crossed in ront of you or holding the bar on each side.

A few other options for quads that'll work pretty much the whole body are:

DB squats (try with a swiss ball as well)
One legged squats off of a bench with a DB in your hand
BB or DB Lunges
Sissy squats
BB hack squats

Try two ten pound plates under your heels. Also hold the bar at the chest in the "clean" position."clean" -as in clean and jerk position.Keep your elbows high and head up.-----TJ

a lot of guys lay the bar across their shoulders and then form an "x" with their arms for balance. i don't like that b/c it does allow the bar to approach your throat. what i do is this: take an underhand grip (as w/bb curls) but put your hands close together and kind of roll the weight back onto your front delts while maintaining your grip. this gives you more control over the movement of the bar. i do agree w/tj about the plates under your heels as well. best of luck.
