Planet Hollywood Grand Opening Beverly Hills 1995
« on: March 15, 2010, 05:43:05 pm »

As I mentioned briefly on another post, in a couple of weeks I am going to be putting on the market again some natural shaving products  i developed, I had sold for over ten years.

I was going over some old files, and I found, my guest pass to the Planet Hollywood opening in Beverly Hills in 1995.

I wrote about this in an Untold Arnold post, but seeing this brought back memories. I spent an hour talking to Sly, and every star in Hollywood was there. Some great memories.

Some one asked me in an email what Sly and I talked about. GOLF! He was obsessed with golf. He also had a great interest in Real Estate.

Rocky a golfer? What's the real Stallone like?

Hey Mark, Very intelligent. Surprised with the verbiage and vocabulary. We also talked about high end Swiss Watches, as he is a collector. I had seen him many times around LA,  When I was hanging in that circle, and he remembered I had built him a custom chin bar setup a few years earlier.

And yes in person without his "special shoes he is very short.

Kind of a surreal moment Bruce Willis, Arnold, Sly, and Steven Seagal were standing near a table having cigars and talking.

I also remember Oprah couldn't take her eyes off Arnold.

I have said this many times in person Arnold has an unmatched Charisma.

Don, these are very interseting insights.

When you say that Sly is very short with out his special shoes, how short could he be? I have heard that he is in the 5'7-5'8 range. Is this possible? You have seen him numerous times, lets put this baby to rest once and for all. Give us your best estimate.

Don, what part of Italy did your family come from? Can you speak Italian?

Please keep the stories coming.

Hey  Dom I am about 5 - 101/2 and with a dress shoe a tad under 6Fft.

I saw Sly at George Papascik's gym in Santa Monica he was wearing regular tennis shoes, walked over to say hi, I can say wihout a doubt he is 5' -7

Other times I saw him and he looked me eye to eye, he was wearing special boots at the time.

If anyone is interested I can tell the back story of how I got the VIP Pass.

My Italian roots are from the Naples area. Was going to live there a few months out of the year, but my girlfreinds son had a child and she wanted to be close being a grandma. I really love Europe, so different than our country. The people are not so money driven, but are into family, relaxed lifestyle etc. Here we can't live if we don't look at our Blackberry's a hundred times a day.

One of the greatest watches in the world is a brand called Panerai. I will tell you in my next post how Sly took the brand from a limited Italian  militarywatch to the just about the most popular brand in the world! He wore this at he Planet Hollywood party.

Big Surprise coming next week.

I've also stood next to Sly on a number of occasions. Don's right- he wears rather tall shoes in public most of the time so it's hard to gauge his true height. In these big ol' shoes he was around 5'11", so I'm guessing 5'8", tops, barefoot.

Back when I was in college a buddy went west to Cali to train for a week at Santa Monica Training Center (George's gym). My friend was 5'8" and he said he was slightly taller than Sly, who he saw every day for about week. This was about the time he would have been training for Rocky IV.

BTW- Regarding that other guy's height, here's some photographic evidence. I'm 5'9". Jim Schmaltz (former FLEX editor) is 5'10". The other guys seems to be a bit taller than us, even counting the fact that he's wearing boots.

Don, I just thought of another question.

It does still exist, although I think it's moved. It's off Olympic Ave in Santa Monica I believe.

In the 40 or so years I have seen Arnold with Franco it seems they have an incredible bond. At the cigar dinners Franco was always there, and you can tell there was a great friendship. As Arnold got more and more famous, he still had a group of bodybuilding freinds he hung with. After he would train at World's he would take a bunch of guys and eat at the Rose Cafe. So many people I have met in Hollywood, once they get what they want from you they dispose of you like a dirty tissue.

The Santa Monica Bodybuilding Center had equipment George built that was so unique I would have a hard time describing it, counter balance weights, amazing stuff.

A friend of mine called me and told me about the Planet Hollywood grand opening. They attended to block off all of Rodeo Dr. from Wilshire blvd all the way to the next street. It was going to be a red carpet that led it'way to a stage. As you walked on the other side of the stage there was tables chairs all set up for a party. Before they could set this up they had to get approval from each of the store owners. my friend's family owned several buildings on Rodeo and they had no objection to the closing down Rodeo for the party etc. Part of the arrangement was they wanted ten VIP paces to the party. My friend called me and said he could get me a pass, and I couldn't resist. When I got there is was like the Academy Awards. As I walked up to my friend he told me he was sorry that all the passes were gone and I could watch the stars come in from the street only. Just as I was walking away a security guard came up to me and asked if I was Don Cestone, he told me my friends uncle gave me his pass to attend. I had to show security my driver's liscense, and he instructed me to drap the madallion around my neck and not to remove it, as anyone without the pass would be escorted out by security. I was blown away. The next thing I knew I was walking down the red carpet along side Danny Glover and Kevin Spacey! It was an incredible night. When I over some of my old files and folders I have been so lucky to have done some really intresting things.

I really dig your 'insider' knowledge of the hollywood crowd. Do you have any more interesting anecdotes?

Also have you considered making a training manual/book?

Chris I shot you out an email.

I would love to write about my experiences traning Hollywood stars, and a insider's look at the dark side of bodybuilding, the supplement Industry fraud. etc.

Check out my Bob Hoffman posts, people are followers and simply can't question the norm.

What is interesting about seeing Hollywood people up close is that most of them look really bad.

Mel Gibson told me he thought that Arnold had a face that was perfect for the camera. It could be photograped or filmed and look good at any angle.
