ANTI AGING SUPPLEMENTS
« on: December 27, 2009, 12:45:53 pm »

I was reading Lee Haney's website.  He was discussing/offering supplements that I have not heard of before for anti-aging.
The supplements are the following:

Resveratrol
Ubiquinol
Vitamin D3

Does anyone have any info to provide about these?
Recommended dosages?
Recommendations to use or not use these products?

It sounds like they are various different forms of anti oxidants.  I currently take Soleniem, a multi vitamin, A & E, and vitamin C.

We all want to age as slowly/well as we can.
Any input you have would be appreciated.  Thanks.

60 Minutes did a report on resveratrol a while back.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/25/60minutes/main4752082.shtml

Vitamin D is kinda the hot new supplement for a lot of reasons.  It seems to help with both test levels and cholesterol ratios to some degree.  We are supposed to manufacture the Vitamin D we need from our exposure to the sun, but some folks don't get enough sun and there is a theory that the ability to synthesize sun into D is broken in about 70% of us.  Just a theory, though ... I haven't seen any proof of that.  I can tell you on a personal level that 2000 IUs of D daily increased my HDL (good) cholesterol.

Ubiquinol is supposedly the active form of Coenzme Q10 (CoQ10), which is shown to aid in cellular energy and cardiac function.  It might be particularly important to people who have been prescribed statin drugs since statins tend to deplete CoQ10.

Isn't it funny that just a few years ago we were supposed to stay out of the sun rays for fear of skin cancer, now we hear that we should increase our exposure for the positive affects of Vitamin D?

Shows how we go full circle.

Of course if we bake our hides in the sun, it could cause cancer, but a fair dose every day is good for us.....that's one of the reason's God created the sun!

ubiquinol is especially heart protective and is pretty expensive.  It is a much more absorbable and active form of CoQ10.  Ubiquinone is the previous form which isn't as active.   You have to pay attention so that you don't get them confused.  You can buy a lesser dose of ubiquinol and get the same benefits of much higher doses of the ubiquinone form.

Ed Kellogg has written some excellent articles on the four levels/stages of aging, and  offers several ways to stave it off.

Resveratrol
Ubiquinol
Vitamin D3

Resveratol is the anti-oxidant found in red wine of red/purple grape juice.
http://www.lef.org/resveratrol/

Unbiquinol; see this link
http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2007/jan2007_report_coq10_01.htm

Vit D3; http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamind.asp

I have read that some recommend doses as high as 10,000 mg with no reported ill effects.

Burr,

I've read his articles in Frank Zane's excellent "Building The Body" magazines. Of particular interest is....Optimizing Protein for Long Term Health, in the Summer 2006 issue,  Four Levels of the Aging Process,Part 1, in the Winter 2006 issue, and Four Levels of the Aging Process, Part 2, in the Spring 2007 issue.

Over the past several years, I have taken this advice, and have felt much better for it.  I think Dr. Kellogg is definitely onto something!

i at present use 3 gms of beta-alanine and 300 gms of coq-10 with 5 grams of creatine prior to training (20-30 minute before) with my whey shake and some carbs such as 1/2 cup of oatmeal.  i have noticed a distinct difference when using/not using this stack during my training. my recovery during and between sets is exemplary when on and i can maintain my stes for longer periods of time (more contractions). this gives me more time under tension per set/workout and has a tremendous effect on hypotrophy.  the studies out there all suppport the theory that this stack will allow for a greater efficiency of ATP production in the body.
rserveratol, although found in red wine, is a wonder supplement for antioxidation and heart health.  the supplement is a better option as you'd need an awful lot of wine to be ingested in order to get what you have in one capsule.  not a good idea unless you're staying in for the weekend!

Jim, do you know the recommended dosage of  resveratrol? There has been controversy as to human related dosages in relation to animal studies. I wonder if like other substances, if you drink red wine(a glass or two a day-my daily dosage) that there would be cumulative effects?

"300 gms of coq-10"

thats a lot of Q10. and it doesn't come cheaply. The recommended dose is 2-3 gms per kilogram of bodyweight.

I also posted a good link for the basic information on Vit D. But if you think Zane knows better, then so be it.

dosages recommended are in the 2-4,00 IU range. Higher if your blood work shows a deficiency.

not sure on the reservatro fred as i haven't added it to the regimen yet.
doc could probably help there. also doc, 300 may seem high but that's usd only for the training effect and hasn't been shown to be detrimental in usrs, quite the oposite actually.  the dosage you mentioned is quite fine though for regular daily usage as a supllement.

also, supposdly the us government is going to change very soon the reccomended dose of d to at least 800 iu a day.  there are some nutritionists and researchers who are suggesting the 2000 ius though and there have also been some very interesting studies done on the vitamin using 200 as the daily marker.  i make sure to get at least 100 iu's daily as i do go outside quite  bit.

I have given up looking for the secret formula for anti-aging. Every now and then something new is on the market and even scientists (or those you call themselves so) cannot agree on a few special supplements that really work. So my own conclusion is very, very basic and grounded on common sense: I try to eat good food, have my portion of fruits every day, drink a lot (but not too much) high quality water, don´t smoke, try to sleep 7 to 8 hours per day, drink only on the weekend (Ok, sometimes too much, but live is short...lol), workout regulary, intense but not to often, I try to avoid any injury, I do cardio, I keep my brain working (learing something new is key) and have my doctor make a checkup once a year. I expose myself to the sun sometimes, but not too often, but try to avoid a sunburn in any case. I use a quality facial and body care, also very basic. And that´s all. The rest is genetics. Plus a positive attitude towards life helps, too. Sorry, if my reply should be too long and bore somebody Tongue.
