Forget about Kaz....Herman Goerner was KING !!!!
« on: September 04, 2008, 04:21:39 pm »

One man that nobody gives due respect to is Herman Goerner from the early 20th century. This german/south african strongman was possibly the strongest man ever. And you know that he did not use steroids as he was lifting record poundages in the 20's and 30's. Kaz is great but definitely steroid enhanced. Herman Goerner is KING !!! Look him up and lets discuss the great man.

Am I right in thinking that his one handed deadlift record of 727.5 pounds still stands today?

Goerner, was something else and very hard to compare with others, I feel the same about Anderson and his 1200 exhibition training squats.

Cannot remember his best deadlift but it was very very close to 800lbs, and was way ahead of his time.

His era had a big emphasis on grip and Goerner excelled here.

That was my first thought when I read up about Goerner, that he reminded me of Anderson and his showmanship ways and strength claims. Some of Goerners lifts sound pretty incredible for the time period, but they all seem to have been performed in front of many impartial witnesses so he may well have been a genuine freak of strength.
If true, his claim of deadlifting over 600 pounds using only two fingers of each hand is truly amazing.

Georner actually had a well built body. While the great Anderson looked like a slob.

Glad to see a post about Goerner Smiley
Without a doubt he is the weightlifter I would most like to emulate.

He was well known for being very creative and constantly changing his lifting regime which I believe earned him the title of Strongest Man. I dont wish to debate the saga of the Strongest Man Ever but it is my firm belief that Goerner earned this title more than any other man due to his great all-round ability and excellence in 'pet' lifts such as the one/two hand deadlifts, one/two hand swings, curls of all varieties and various aspects of grip too numerous to mention.

Many of his records to this day are intact although it would be fair to say that some are not practiced to the same extent. However, this does not detract from the fact that his records are outstanding in a field where any man with all limbs intact is free to tred. Some lifts official and unofficial are as follows:

Two hands KB swing: 115.5kg/254.78lbs x 1 rep
   {two kettlebells - perfomed on first attempt in March 1931}                 (WR)
Two hands KB swing: 100.5kg/221.75lbs x 1 rep
   {four kettlebells - performed with feet stationary in August 1934}         (WR)
Right hand KB swing: 100kg/220.5lbs x 1 rep
   {two kettlebells - unofficially perfomed in March 1920}                        (WR)

Two hands BB Curl: 110kg/242.5lbs x 1 rep
   {performed with slight back bend but no swing in November 1932}

Two hands Clean: 200.7kg/442.5lbs
   {'Continental' clean - perfomed in January 1933}
Right hand Clean: 135kg/297.5lbs
   {Full Clean - performed in November 1919}                                        (WR)

Two hands Deadlift: 360kg/793.75lbs
   {Overhand hook grip - performed in October 1920}
Right hand Deadlift: 330kg/727.5lbs
   {Overhand hook grip - unofficially performed in October 1920}              (WR)

It has also been said that Goerner performed a Right Handed Deadlift with an overhand grip (non-hook) of 251.5kg/554.5lbs but there is doubt of the accuracy of this statement.

Just thought I would give a little background on my favourite athlete of all times. I think he was one of a kind, the like maybe never to be seen again.
I have made it one of my goals in life to equal and perhaps surpass some of the records made by Goerner (especially in aspects of grip strength) as homage to the great man. Heres hoping!

Thanks,

Andrew

Im not sure if comment #6 is aimed at me but yes I am a member at Iron History and would recommend anyone with an interest in any type of lifting to go there and check it out as it has a wealth of information.

I'm not quite sure what you meant by the 'truth' as there is not likely to be many people alive to verify any lifting that was performed at that time and so we must trawl through any records written by witnesses of the time.

Obviously there is much debate over Hermann's records as some believe they may have never taken place and/or have been exaggerated over time. If you check out Iron History within the Goerner threads you will find that some information has been recovered from the past but the complete picture is still not clear and may never be.

It is up to the individual to make his own judgement. It is difficult to remain open minded in this field as there has historically been frauds, exaggerations, clerical errors and downright lies since weightlifting began but what I do believe is that Hermann did perform the one and two handed deadlifts of 330kg and 360kg, respectively, and many other feats which are simply astounding.

Thanks,

Andrew

You can not compare eras. Too many differences. I have always thought that Marvin Eder's 505 bench in 1951 was the best bench in history because it was so out of context with the times. Only 280 pound Hepburn beat him to the 500 level. There were few lifters even at 400 at that level. Reg park at 245 would be the third to do 500+. How many natural 195 pounders without a super suit could do that today?

Gives you an idea of what Hitler would have looked like had he taken up weight training instead of politics.
