Does anyone have Any Info on Bill West? From what I have read, this guy was a true pioneer of the iron game and started the original westside barbell, but there is very little info of him on the internet.

The best real info on Bill is in Iron Man Sept 66. Vol 25 No 6. This may be before he gained some recognition in the Weider mags.

Bill started as weighing 87lb at 17 (quoted)  (competed in the 123llb class after a few years) and came out of Phillie, moved to LA, became a stunt double for a living and was the first guy to really work out powerlifting.

Until then it was thought to be the domain of bbers or guys who could not really lift. His Westside Barbell (Westside Culver City) changed all that.

He had a couple of Westside Barbell locations, one burnt down (lighting was candle powered) he trained Hal Connelly, Pat Casey,  Thurber and others in the mid sixties and then Connelly introduced him to an aspiring young hammer thrower called George Frenn. Basically any one who was anyone dropped into westside in those days, George Woods Oly shot putter (2 silvers) Dallas Long WR holder in shot and OG Gold, Steve Marjanian, in the mid sixities it was it.

Bill invented the rocking box squat, which was forgotten for 20 years until Louie bought it back. Was one of the first to squat with bar down back, wide stance, and aranged for the Brits to come out to Calif for a dual meet US (actually Calif) vs England, and he and George campaigned strongly for PLing to get out from under the weightlifting control in the AAU. Eventually York saw the writing on the wall and had the first worlds in their back yard, in an attampt (sucessful) to steal the sport back. The top westside guys though never competed in the worlds, and basically from around 71 Westside was finished. George was still campaigning strongly with his throwing but have found no reference to Bill after that time.

Many years ago in conversation with a very well known Calif Pl authority he told me some rather sad stories about Bill after the demise of Westside, that I would rather not put on the internet. For someone who worked so hard for so long for the benefit of so many, you would like a happy ending.

I am currently cleaning out some old mags (found some S & H back in 1938 still with white pages) and in issue nov 61 under sucess stories we find

"Bill West is one of the many muscles men of Muscle Beach weighlifting club of Santa Monica. He has done a bench dead stop of 420 at 198 alos 485 full squat 170lb curls\ and 255, 230 ,  305 on the OLs"

and he does not look young either.
