Dear Vince, I have been training for years but just started competing in powerlifting and I must say that I am hooked! My question is did you always train for powerlifting and bodybuilding at the same time? If not, how did your training change once you shifted your focus towards powerlifting?

Eric It really was not so much that I changed my training but my diet.Even when I trainied for bodybuilding I still used heavier weights with lower reps, but my diet changed to shed bodyfat.I found that when I was cutting up I could not obtain optimal strength with that diet. When I triedf to use light weights with more reps my size suffered. Now I use a routine where I alternate high intensity with high volume.I have been able to  keep a fair amount of size .

Thanks Vince! I too have found that I respond better to heavier weights and lower reps even when I am bodybuilding.

vince, i moved this question here. it's from john prink.

This question is for Vince:

Just curious; I'm a master's powerlifter (45) and have competed in and trained for powerlifting meets for over 20 years.  I remember reading the old Strength and Health and Muscular Development magazines back in the 70's featuring you and the other powerlifters of the day. In the recent past, I was reading the american powerlift evolution website (defunct now - shame too. It was very good!) which detailed the guys routines from the past.

When you were training for a meet (or even in the off season) can you give a brief run down of what you did in regards to your deadlift training? like sets/reps or percentages....

Also as a side note, did you ever find the close grip bench press helpful as an assistance movement for the bench press itself? or did you stick to staples like dips and other triceps work?

Thanks a bunch.

Ciao,

John

Bob How are youy My Friend? I did close grip benches to build tricep power which aided the finish of the bench.I have included a sample 16 week peaking for all three lifts.

Vince, I'm. Stalled on my Deadlift- pulled 515 a couple workouts earlier in the year and 520 once. I've stalled at 505 for 2 ,I have been doing knee level partials to  build power and worked. Up to 700 for a few.. I want to get my regular dead up to 550 to 600 for a few reps. Any ideas.? I'm 6 3. 245- 250. I think I'm big enough to pull that. My parallel squat is 605 for reps.

My basic sticking point is ankle to shin level, on I'm to the knees, I'm cool. I'm doing them for power and back development, esp lower back, so I  do regular style, feet about shoulder width, butt down as low as I can make it- I'm 6'2" so that's the hard part.    Any input is appreciated. Ps one of the old timers brought you up several times- said you're known as 'the forklift'. He was talking about your 800 plus deadlifting. He's all about Paul Anderson too. What do you think about Paul?     Thanks, James

one exercise I did to help my start was "ankle deads"Stand on block so bar is touching instep and pull  from there.I also liked to pull in a powerrack I would pull the bar from floor to pins ,about an inch below my knee cap ,and hold on pins for six seconds.OLD SCHOOL but it helped!!! Keep me posted My Friend!!!

Vince, I hit a 500lb PR on deads last month, and now I have crashed back down to 450. It seems as if I take one step foward and two back whenever I hit a PR. Why  does this keep happening? I have a meet coming up in six weeks and I don't want to bomb out  Embarrassed

You Peaked to Fast My Friend.Try not going above 80% of your 1Rm for 3sets of 3 each week until 10 days before the contest.Keep me posted I think you will be Pleasantly surprised. You seemed to have gone stale.Do not leave your lift in the Gym.I pulled 880 in the Gym in 1976 before the 76 Worlds in York and only pulled 780 or so.Do not make the mistake I did.Save it for the contest .Thats where it Counts!!!

I pulled 495 and it felt light as a feather! The meet has been reset for March 22, so I have some time to get some good prep in.
